Our Pre-K classes are the classes for children who turned four by September 1, and we have several choices of days and times. These classes focus on developing skills needed for kindergarten. Academics are introduced in a low key, yet effective way. Phonics, phonemic awareness, and math are infused in our program at every turn. However, the children see the day as one that is full of play and fun activities which it is! There is more of an emphasis on academics in the Pre-K classes than in the three-year-old classes. Teachers work independently with children to emphasize certain skills. Developing their skills in personal independence, such as toileting, putting on a jacket, recognizing a situation that calls for a certain action, and solving problems are very important.
Our teachers are trained in the correct, positive way to speak to all children. By being consistent in everything they say, the children develop a sense of security in being able to count on what will happen next. If they make a mistake, they hear what should happen, not what they did wrong, and they happily move on. The goal is always to stress positive rather than negative reinforcement.
All children are assessed informally on a daily basis and formally once a year. This allows you to know where your child is developmentally and it allows the teacher to plan individually for your child.
Our goal is for the children to love school, love God, and feel confident about their abilities. With that confidence, they will be prepared for a successful transition to Kindergarten the following year.
